It was a light weekend as Spain, Germany, and Italy all took a short holiday break. However, England was in full stride with Boxing Day matches.
The Kovačić saga continues.
This was supposed to be the year Kovačić would become the midfield engine for all the new recruits Chelsea signed- Havertz, Werner, Thiago Silva; to go alongside Pulisic and Giroud. But it just hasn’t panned out. Most Chelsea matches this season Kovačić starts on the bench. He had a prime opportunity to shine on Saturday as the Blues took on a struggling Arsenal side. But an easy three points for Chelsea quickly became a 3-1 loss as Arsenal scored twice in the first half (penalty, free kick) to kill all Chelsea morale for the rest of the match.
Kovačić got the start but was taken off at halftime for tactical reasons. He was given a 5/10 grade from 90min.com as he “Started brightly and drew a foul from Pablo Mari which resulted in a booking, but didn’t make use of possession to feed his attackers with enough consistency. Hooked at half-time and understandably so.
It doesn’t seem like Lampard is all that keen on Kova. If this form/playing time continues for the next two months, will it force Kovačić to look for a new club in the summer?
Alen Halilović made his first start for Birmingham on Saturday in a 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest. Halilović had to be taken off at halftime as he pulled up with a minor groin injury and is now doubtful for Tuesday’s match with Derby County, Birmingham Mail reports. He received a 5.5 grade with “One outrageous early turn took him away from Ryan Yates but despite some bright touches he constantly seemed short of options before being taken off with an injury at half time.”

Kovačić is not playing bad for chelsea…in fact he was player of the season (last season), and some English commentators actually pick him as the player of the year (2020). I think the problem may be Lampard. He’s not an experienced manager, and he is struggling to optimize this talented squad.

Halilovic did fuck all. He tried to fake a groin injury near the end of the first half but the trainers told him to get back out there and he seemed to be running around just fine.
He had one shot.
Lampard just doesn’t like Kovacic. He subbed him out at the half with Chelsea down 2-0. He leaves Kante in, who brings nothing offensively and is responsible for the 2nd Arsenal goal. Now they’re down 3-0.
He started, but was subbed off at the half. I have no idea how he did, but that usually isn’t a sign of confidence.
