Ante Budimir scored two goals and received 8.9/10 MOTM honors as Osasuna handed Barcelona their first defeat (4-2) of the season. Budimir opened up the scoring in the 18′; heading home a perfect header from a sharp angle. This is what Budimir does best in the box — use his head when he receives proper service. In the 2nd half, Budimir was fouled in the box and converted the penalty to make it 3-1 Osasuna. He’s not getting any younger at 33 years old but has been huge for Osasuna with La Liga goals over the past 12 months. Could he start receiving the the same service from Croatian wingers at the international level?
Joško Gvardiol scored the the lone goal for Manchester City in a 1-1 draw versus Newcastle United Saturday and earned MOTM honors. He looked more like a striker than a defender on the play, slamming on the brakes in the box before perfectly placing the ball inside the far-right post. Gvardiol was given an impressive 9/10 grade from Goal.com as he “Showed the predatory instincts of a first-rate striker with a sumptuous turn and finish to give City the lead. That was his sixth goal contribution for City in 2024; not bad for a defender, who also did his usual duties very well.”
Mateo Kovačić played the full 90 minutes for City as well in the draw. Kova had an average day at the office and was given a 6/10 grade by Goal.com. “While he has proven he can play in a deeper-lying midfield role, the Croatian didn’t have his best day and at times his midfield partners were overrun.”
Matija Frigan scored two goals Saturday in a 2-1 Westerlo victory over Stand Liege. Frigan received MOTM honors and a 9.0 rating in the match. Luka Vušković assisted Frigan on his 64′ game winner.
Ivan Perišić made his PSV Eindhoven debut Saturday, getting the start and playing 65 minutes in a 2-0 victory over Willem II. He received a 7.1 rating from FOTMOB for his efforts.
Luka Sučić go the start for Real Sociedad and played 76 minutes in a 3-0 victory over Valencia. He was given a 7.2 rating from FOTMOB.
Has Lukic from RB Salzburg, who Anonymous refers to, been mentioned here on Croatiansports before?
Wikipedia:
“Oliver Lukić (born 22 September 2006) is a professional footballer who plays as a midfielder for 2. Liga club FC Liefering. Born in Austria, which he previously represented at youth levels, he switched to represent Croatia at the under-19 level in 2024.
On 11 October 2023, he was named by English newspaper The Guardian as one of the best players born in 2006 worldwide.”
First time I have heard his name that I recall. Apparently he has now played a couple of games for Croatia U19…..does anyone have a scouting report?
Seems like still yet another player with serious potential…..
Yes, he was mentioned when he switched to Croatia.
He’s supposed to be another Luka Sucic.
Poor Austrians are getting cleaned out by Pletikosa. I hated him as a goalkeeper, but he’s doing a great job snagging diaspora talent.
Lukic is technically not as good as Sucic but is quicker and physically stronger.
HNS is doing a good job in poaching youth players from Germany and Austria to supplement our own talent in Croatia.
Look I was born and raised in Canada and grew up playing competitive hockey and not so competitive soccer. If I had been good enough I’m either I would have represented Canada for hockey and Croatia for football 🤣🤣
Anonymous,
Not sure if you have recently turned to a diet of coffee and amphetamines, or what exactly is fuelling all this, but thanks for the insights and updates!
He really should change the ‘Anonymous’ handle and pick a name
I agree.
Ivor Pandur 24 y.o.
Saved 6 of 7 shots on target today
W/ Hull winning 3-1
The goal he let in was a penalty
He’s top quartile save % in Championship
Twitter search shows Hull City fans say he stood on his head today
Sofascore have him a rating of 8.4 today (highest rating of ALL players on both teams)
***.sofascore.com/team/football/hull-city/96
Hull City Barry Cooper gave him a rating of 10/10 for the game
***.hulldailymail.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/hull-city-player-ratings-vs-9594539
#####
Ivor Pandur: Made four big saves in the opening six minutes as City were almost blown away, the second and third in particular were very, very good. Could do nothing about the penalty. Without him, City don’t win this game and for that, he deserves top marks. 10/10
#####
Even Destiny Ugodie follows him on IG (and they’ve never played on the same team)
Championship is a much harder / better league than Cyprus (Ivusic – never mind he’s same age as Livakovic) and Greek (Kotarski)
No clue why we’ve never heard of him before and at very least ahead of Ivusic in the silly Cyprus league is ahead of him at this point
See why Anonymous pointed out how silly it was for Dalic to announce the team TEN DAYS before England – the lazy nose pickers could have seen two more of Pandur’s games as reference points
Next game vs. Norwich (Crnac) on Saturday
P.S. he has a LOT of competition at Hull City
HULL CITY HAS SIX KEEPERS ON THE ROSTER – U READ THAT RIGHT – SIX including
England U21 Carl Rushworth (who played at Swansea City last season) – you know Hull City want an English keeper as #1
Former Swiss U21 Racioppi
And Pandur has played EIGHT out of EIGHT games this season
Do u realize how good he has to be to be ahead of five keepers ?
Who does Ivusic have for competition in Crypus ? lol
Outrageous that Dalic / nose-pickers have overlooked him
And he’s English is very good too – interview

Great information you’re sharing, but to be perfectly clear, Pandur was profiled on this site a few years ago as a potential elite keeper of the future. Prior to this season, he made a gradual progression from backup keeper at Verona to backup at Fortuna Sittard, to starter at Sittard last season. It’s great that he’s playing so well in the last eight games. However, most important for a keeper is consistency. Ivušić has been excellent as a starting keeper for a few years now and has continually proven himself on the field, even when making spot starts for Croatia (saved a big win against Slovakia) or coming off the bench and winning a penalty shootout against Tunisia. Kotarski also has a few years of experience as an everyday starting keeper and has demonstrated consistently good performance on the field over that time. It’s also hard to argue that the Championship is stiffer competition than playing in the Greek Super League AND in UEFA competition. Not all Greek teams are that great, but the top four or five are really good. The Championship is full of talent, but it’s mostly younger, less-proven talent accepting bargain wages. Remember, Simon Sluga was also great in the Championship, but his big pay day came by moving to Bulgaria. Alen Halilović played in the championship as he approached the low point in his career and turned down the offer to stay…
Pandur’s time will come, and it’s great that he’s starting in the Championship, but he probably isn’t ready for the repka just yet. At least not while Ivušić continues to play so well, never mind where he is playing (Cyprus but also UEFA Conference League)
Highlights of Union SG [Franjo Ivanovic] vs. Kortirjk [Roko Simic] game
***.youtube.com/watch?v=BCbHWX4QiEA
As u see Franjo involved in all 3 goals
Assist on 1st one
Rifled a cross into the box (which defender put into his own net) for 2nd
1-2 in the box to score the 3rd
Not sure if this game is representative of his usual play (reminds of a young Pjaca pre-knee) – but if so – crazy this guy is only on standby for U21
Especially when I compare to Crnac – who I’ve seen bits and bobs – and tbh has impressed / stood-out at all for Norwich
P.S. as mentioned – he’s lucky he’s playing with 22 y.o. Ghanaian Fuseini (surprised he hasn’t been called up for Ghana yet – considering their squad) – won’t be shocked if he gets the nod
More importantly – they have excellent chemistry / understanding on the pitch

Good list. Perišić isn’t eligible to play in Champions League, just so you know.
Vlašić came back from injury and got an assist off the bench for Torino as well.
Yo Dalic –
England going to name their squad for Nations League on October 3rd
***.englandfootball.com/articles/2024/Sep/27/england-mens-womens-squads-to-be-announced-for-october-international-window-20242709
That’s TEN days after you did.
In some many cases players will have played an addition 3 games (2x Europe plus 1x League) over this 10 day window
Let’s not be so hasty next time to rush out the squad list
It’s a reoccurring habit of yours (and a silly one at that)
I know the nose pickers want to put their feet up instead of scouting another 10 days of fixtures – but insist they do more going forward
Kramaric must be injured and has not been even on the bench last two weeks ? perhaps a good opportunity for Dalic to play Budimir and Matanovic upfront against Scotland.
Mart,
Not an injury…….
Looks like the flu?….
Sep 27 03:18
Kramaric expected to miss out against Werder
“TSG Hoffenheim will probably have to manage without Andrej Kramaric when they face Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga on Sunday.
The Croatian international missed Hoffenheim’s 1-1 draw with FC Midtjylland in the Europa League on Wednesday due to illness.
And as confirmed by the Bundesliga club on Friday, there is a “high probability” that Kramaric will be unavailable against Werder Bremen as well…..
Kramaric’s absence is a big blow for Hoffenheim, with the 33-year-old having scored four goals in four Bundesliga games so far this season.”
Thanks, yes I saw something in the media yesterday stating that he is sick.
Modric with a deft hockey assist from a free kick for the 1-0 Real lead. Players have left the field after shit getting thrown etc.
Budimir going well right now with two goals against Barca and getting MOTM…
And now with the younger strikers…. Igor has had two starts in a row and he gets his first Bundesliga goal. Has to be great for his confidence and momentum…..Looks like we have both he and Frigan now scoring, with Frigan netting two and getting MOTM in his last match…. then Ljubicic also scored two a couple of matches ago for LASK in the Austrian Bundesliga and he was MOTM….Our future prospects up front are starting to look more promising than they seemed six months ago…
The good thing about Matanović is that he seems unaffected by any scoring droughts.
He played a couple games for us, a few for Frankfurt (coming close to scoring, but always just coming up short), yet keeps working hard at it and continually putting himself in a position to score.
Guys like this usually score or create scoring chances for others.
Looking forward to a two-striker lineup in the next round of Nations League games with him in the lineup.
Soticek subbed on 55′
Game currently in 68′
Franjo Ivanovic goal (can’t find it yet)
So 1 goal + 1 assist today
Ivanovic is playing well in Belgium. Some people here must have watched him play in the HNL for Rijeka in 2023-24…..can any of our resident experts offer a scouting report? He is exceeding expectations? What is his potential?
Yea I was curious about why this guy was always hyped, because his scoring average for Rijeka was pretty bad (8 goals in 34 games) and he only had one goal for our U21s (in several games played).
But he seems to be played well and starting at his new club, and has a goal so far…so we’ll see how it goes with him.
He seems like he’s technically gifted (which is what I like to see).
As much as we all loved Olic, it’s very frustrating to have a technically-inept striker.
Looks like our new crop of guys (Matanovic, Ivanovic, etc.) have some strong technical skills.
Similar player to Olic not as fast though. Works hard descent technique poor finisher. He was a fan favorite at Rijeka as although he missed a lot of chances he always worked his socks off. Watched a lot of his games for Rijeka last season and this season.
Micky VDV
Wow
x.com/Eplmax/status/1840416563276435937
Interception plus 3/4 of the pitch run past SIX Man U players to the by-line
Perfect pass to Johnson for the goal
Speed matters
Good think Gvardiol did those speed sessions over the summer w/ Mickey VDV
Awesome brate, thanks for Tottenham updates. I visit croatiansports.com for this very stuff.
How did Man Crush Dude on West Ham do? Brass tacks.
Anyone has comments for bradaric? He is loaned to verona but sat on the bench. Still rmb his wonder strike against england u21
Croatia’s LB/LWB spot is there for the taking, but I guess he didn’t work hard enough for it.
I expect us to see a youngster come in and take that spot (with Oršić/Sosa probably just filling in with Gvardiol at LCB in a 3-5-2)
AZ….No recent information.
But for what it is worth, I watched him and Basic play a couple of games for Salernitana last season. Neither was a stand out, but they both held their own and didn’t look at out of place in a very good league like Serie A…..Bradaric is a steady player from what I saw. Watched the Salernitana games on FUBO from Canada.
Thanks for these reports and updates Anonymous! Great stuff.
Igor off after 68′
Marmoush scored a 2nd goal a couple minutes before-hand
It’s good (and bad) that Marmoush is playing next to him
Good bc Marmoush gets a lot of attention
But bad bc he wants to do a lot himself (he’s a bit selfish) and first thought is “shoot” rather than set up his team-mates
Igor scores !!!
x.com/GoalsXtra/status/1840400468368904549
Positioning / movement / strength in box are elite (and his stand-out qualities)
35′ Ivanovic wins ball back in box makes run (gets stripped last min)
36′ Simic asked for cross – he heads it (just a couple yards wide)
38′ Fuseini nice run – pass to Ivanovic who makes horizontal run across top of box – and shoots across his body (too close to keeper)
Game is actually kind of good – end to end stuff – Fuseini and Ivanovic good chemistry / understanding
1st half done
Liked what I saw by both Ivanovic and Simic – esp. Ivanovic
It’s good that Roko has this set-up back – got a lot handed to him / doors opened in his career bc of Dario – important to see how he responds to this “adversity” (if it would be funny if Dario orchestrated the “adversity” in order to build up character / grit / perseverance of his son)
Nice assist by Franjo Ivanovic for Fuseini goal
x.com/Goals_Centre/status/1840396423600255418
Basel vs. Lucern starting soon
Soticek on the bench
Fast counter
Marmoush nice solo run and beautiful finish (keeper should have done better)
A bit selfish not to pass to Igor – but was like a 2 vs. 5
Igor was probably 10 yards behind Omar when fast counter started and ran full speed in central channel in front of goal (which kept 2 defenders over w/ him) – his run will be under-appreciated but important to keep space open for Omar
No wonder Liverpool etc monitoring Omar – maybe he moves in January if he keeps performing like this
Didn’t see from start – but seems clear they want to get Igor on the score-sheet against this newly promoted (for the first time) team – let’s see if that happens
Here’s the goal
x.com/abongo_jr/status/1840391754836529198
Look at Igor – he’s keeping 3 defenders over w/ him central channel (the 3rd defender gives up so near the goal it’s only 2 w/ him) – but see how far back he is from Omar and how he catches up
If Igor doesn’t run full speed and catch-up – the other 2-3 defenders could have swarmed Omar
Lyonnais vs. Toulouse
1st half over
DCC from the start
Union SG vs. Kortrijk starting shortly
Ivanovic vs. Roko Simic
Both in starting line
Sosa played 1st half
Vlasic sub 63′ – assist 4 min later Adams goal

Matanovic starting 2nd game in a row
Upfront w/ Marmoush
Anonymous was hoping to catch a glimpse of Orsic
Unfortunately starting line-up is out and 35 1/2 y.o. Anthony Nwakaeme (with 1 cap in 2017 w/ Nigeria) is preferred starter at LW
Looking at his playing time – he had 87′ min Sep 1st and 2 45′ min since then
Get the sense (based on Orsic own comments) that he’s “saving himself” for the National Team and trying to “finesse” his minutes etc at Club side (i.e. he doesn’t want to re-injure himself before the Oct fixtures) – I guess he’s sees Perisic getting called up (and not playing at club) and says he can do the same
Barisic also on the bench (he played 14′ last game – rest of month sitting on bench/not in squad) – if not for that Dalic would have him on standby
Hopefully Oršić just comes back to Dinamo in January.
He and Bjelica were great together.
He will have a career resurgence and will give us valuable minutes at LW in the next World Cup (just as he did for us in the last one).
I am more impressed with vuskovic assist than the goal..he can play from deep and make a run..like calaflori..
Stanisic sutalo vuskovic gvardiol ..what a back four! Ball playing defence.
Sucic still need to handle with care as he has ACL. Nowadays football is more of press and run..u need physical and fit players like brozovic type with stamina and tracking back.
I hope orsic is back to at least 80% of his form..kramaric is already 33 yrs old.
Ivanusec shd look for a new club..he is not even sub in from bench for past few games..
AZ with the positivity!
I like it!
I am not too concerned about the young strikers and our defensive department..there is not many proven young midfielders ready to replace kovacic modric and the rest (pasalic is turning 30 soon). Vlasic and majer are injury proned and not consistent enough. Even our LB needs more cover..cant be relying on sosa and perisic..sosa is better playing at LWB.
Luka Sučić was arguably our best central midfielder at these past Euros (on a per minute basis).
He scored one goal against Albania and set up the go-ahead goal against Italy. He also created our only good chance in the first half (that Donnarumma managed to save).
He did all this without playing consistent minutes and was out of position (to cater to Broz being in the lineup).
In addition to Luka Sučić (who is ready to start right now), I would say that Petar Sučić and Baturina are serious prospects who are probably going to be sold soon for 15-20 million plus future transfer percentage.
People here criticize Baturina’s defense, but have forgotten how Kovačić struggled defensively in his early 20s. I think Baturina will be fine.
In addition to these three, we seem to have a dozen central midfield prospects (like Zvonarek for example) who are very intriguing, and I’m sure at least a couple of them will pan out.
Yeah, and when you consider that Kovačić and Pašalić are still improving right now, things look pretty good for the next world cup. Pašalić was never extremely fast, so age probably won’t be much of a factor. His dribbling, passing, positioning, defending and overall game control have gotten very good. Kovačić is really great now. He’s even started shooting well. Behind them, Croatia’s midfield depth is very good. Kramarić has another few years in him as a midfielder. Zvonarek, Robert Ljubičić, Vidović… A few good midfielders waiting in the wings too. “He’s not Modrić” is an unrealistic criticism to make of any player because Modrić is without equal (and is still in his prime at age 39).
The only concern for me is LB/LW.
I’m confident that Oršić will get back to form, and he doesn’t have much mileage… so he will be useful on that left side at LW.
But we do need some more prospects there in case we do want to play four at the back.
Sosa might improve, but the left side is definitely a weak spot when we compare it to what we have in other areas of the field.
When a defenseman scores a goal, you would assume it was a cross from a corner, or a set piece. This Gvardiol goal, and many of the previous ones for Man City, took the skill and composure of a winger or striker. I have seen few games where Pep has utilized Josko almost like a midfielder. The first few time I saw this, he looked a bit out of place. However this time, he was so composed, and confident, it was stunning. In a tough defensive game, Josko broke through the lines, almost unexpectedly took the pass, turned the defender around and curled a right footed (wrong footed) shot just inside the post. Amazing talent. I hope Dalic can find a way to encourage this type of attach in the future.
Here’s a long clip / better angle of Vuskovic —> Frigan 2nd goal
x.com/ilovekranjcar/status/1840084748619612315
Nothing like Olic dropping Frigan from U21 for September matches to sharpen his mind (not sure why he was dropped – he scored 2 goals in 2 matches in June friendlies…)
He’s currently on standby for October but not sure how you don’t call him up
Here’s his goal last week – another great one (noticed that one he went far side – and today he went short side)
x.com/FootballReprt/status/1838576686020931802
Maybe Dalic not calling up Marco Pasalic as he thinks one of the younger players (Frigan or whoever) might be ready in the next year to play RW for the senior team – so he doesn’t want to invite Marco – and than have to drop him in a year (as he has said before it’s hard to make the squad – but once you’re on the squad – it’s hard to get dropped)
Otherwise no clue why still no Marco
Budimir two goals v. Barca. (One a PK.)
Does anybody know what’s happening with Vidovic at Mainz? Unless I am mistaken, he doesn’t seem to be getting playing time and doesn’t even seem to be on the bench for some games…..is that to be expected in the early stages when he is loaned out to a new Bundesliga team?
I was wondering the same thing
Frigan MOTM on both Fotmob (9.0) and Sofascore (8.1).
Vuskovic ranked second best player on Fotmob (8.2) and tied for second best on Sofascore.
Westerlo having a very solid start to the Belgium league season, it seems due in no small way to the part played by these two Croatians….
At a certain point Dalic is not going to be able to ignore Vuskovic anymore. If he keeps playing this way he will need to get the call up, especially if he plays with the same form and level at Tottenham.
I think Dalic is well aware of Vuskovic. Hes very young as a defender, he’ll be up for wc26
Two Croatian
and/or
Two Spurs players (Alfie Devine also on loan – played 90′ today)
Frigan w the brace
Vuskovic w assist on 2nd
Gvardiol scored and received man of the match against Newcastle. We need to find a way to get him on scoring positions for Croatia. It could be from corner kickscrosses or finding open spaces for him to shoot. Also he headed away a cross that would have led to a goal
Josko!
Crnac started again for Norwich
I think a better format would be
Simple table: y-axis list of Croatian NT squad (can take from what Dalic announced – plus key names from U21 e.g. Vuskovic)
x-axis: calendar (next 7 days)
Content of each box who opponent is
That what everyone will know the schedule – and than readers can add commentary on players depending on which games they watch
As e.g. early today we will have
Crnac/Norwich
Orsic/Trabzonspor [pretty sure many will watch as called up again]
Vidovic/Mainz 05
Soticek/Basel
Vuskovic/Westerlo
Beljo/Rapid Vienna vs. Ljubicic/LASK
etc etc etc
I mean if they could give Sucic the start then maybe he’d have more time to do so
Livakovic with a good Europa league game yesterday. He made 2 or 3 great saves, and saved a penalty shot (vs Croatia U21 Franjo Ivanovic). Unlucky not to keep a clean sheet, as Ivanovic unleashed a powerful shot hitting the post, which came back directly to his teammate for an easy finish (poor defending). I was impressed with Ivanovic…he looked threatening all game.
Eric, thanks for update on our players. The reality—a positive state of affairs to be sure, and it means good things for the national team down the road—is we have so many players playing on so many different teams in so many leagues it’s tough to track them all, and gets even busier with Europa League, Champions League and so forth.
To add to your report….I watched Matanovic in his start for Frankfurt against Plzen. He started and played about 60 minutes before being subbed off. I watched until he was subbed. Again, I don’t want to sound like the cheer leading squad with only good things to report, but he was an impact player out there, played really well. He had two chances in the first 16 minutes, and then 2-3 more good opportunities to put one behind the keeper. Even the announcer said at one point that Matanovic seemed to have a “knack” for being in the right place at the right time. Did he score? No. It was a bit like Nations League, he put himself in a good position to score, he created opportunities but didn’t quite finish. But you have to think the potential is there, and if the guy keeps working hard hopefully the goals will come. Even picking up the ball midfield and dishing it off and then joining the attack, he just looked solid in all facets of the game with good speed as he moved upfield. Also of interest they played him, Ekitike and Marmoush—they didn’t rest either of the latter two—and he still got the start. Elitike had a great game, Marmoush was a bit invisible, Matanovic had a better game than Marmoush.
Good stuff A Tin U.
I’m optimistic that the goals will eventually come for Igor. And personally, I feel he is good enough to be first choice CF in several Bundesliga sides. If he doesn’t manage to establish himself at Eintracht, I can easily see him succeeding elsewhere, say, at Werder or Gladbach. Cream always rises to the top.
Plus we can always look forward to Ekitike or Marmoush transferring out next summer…
Thanks @Bartolec1912. As Anonymous is suggesting above, we almost need a few of you operating a central command centre to make sure we get all these games assigned and covered. I can’t keep up with it all, but I am sure having a good time trying.
I am relatively new to this. Question: In the last 25 -30 years, say since independence, has it always been this way? Has there always been this many Croatian players to follow on teams all over Europe? Particularly young players who have such potential who are on their way up in their careers? Or is what we see now with so many Croatian players on so many teams in so many leagues across Europe a more recent phenomenon?
If new, I would have to think it bodes well for the future.
I’ve been following Croatian football for 30 years…and no, there was never this many youth prospects in our entire history.
Igor Matanović just needs to hang out with the workhorse Ante Budimir and learn that kind of work ethic, and he will eventually become great.
The other option is to hang with Bruno Petkovic, and learn how to crush a beer at halftime.
