Am I a fan of Dominik Livaković? Absolutely not.
How is he still the #1 Croatian option between the pipes? I have zero idea. His confidence and positioning lacks in the box. He makes countless errors. Every time a cross comes his way, my blood pressure rises. He’s just not a good goalkeeper. Simple as that. And because of that, Zlatko Dalić will need to come up with a better plan who plays goalkeeper at the World Cup in Qatar this winter…and he has three months to do it. Anyone else is a better option. Anyone.
Livaković is 27 years old and there’s a reason he still plays in the HNL. No one else wants him.
He makes fatal errors ALL THE TIME but this one takes the cake. Tuesday night in Bulgaria, he let in one of the worst “near post” goals I have ever seen. Dinamo had all the momentum in the 1st half – already up 2-0 on Ludogorets in Champions League qualifying – and he lets this howler in. Rule #1 in goalkeeping, never get beat on the near side. NEVER.
I was watching this game live and was shocked when I saw the ball in the back of the net from this tight of an angle.
I will keep lobbying for Livaković to be relieved of his international duties. Grbić and Ivušić on bad days are a better fit. Shoot, take Simon Sluga if you have to. Pletikosa out of retirement. Lovre Kalinić. Subašić. Anyone else.
Livaković should not get on the plane to Qatar in November. The Croatian government should revoke his passport for the rest of the year. Whatever it takes. I’m serious.
Because I guarantee it right now, if he does go to Qatar (which he realistically will), he’s going to give up another goal like he did against the Bulgarian club. But this time it’s going to be at the World Cup.
