WHAT SHOULD I DO? SCORE 2 FIRST HALF GOALS AGAINST MALTA. Croatia got the job done Wednesday night against a poor Malta side, winning 3-0 with two first half goals from Niko Kranjčar and a late header by substitute Nikola Kalinić. In the end, it was just Malta, but Croatia got the job done injury-free nonetheless. Kranjčar has been spectacular in the last three Croatia games since being benched by Tottenham. Croatia end their 2010 qualifying stint undefeated, only dropping points in a 0-0 draw at home against Greece.
GROUP F STANDINGS
Luka Modrić played well in the first half, drilling a ball of the right post, while striker Mladen Petrić was non-existent in the match. The defense was never tested as Vedran Runje only had to watch a close ball sail over the crossbar. Mario Mandžukić looked poor in his performance, nearly scoring a header that sailed right past the post. Ivo Iličević came on late and didn’t have many touches even though he received a fantastic cross from Darijo Srna inside the box that should have been a solid shot on goal.
All in all, an injury-free win that puts Croatia back top of Group F heading into 2011.

TREĆA GENERACIJA PRESIDENT MISHKO LOSES $5 BET TO CSR’S ANTE @ ALPINE VILLAGE
Prva Generacija and Druga Generacija dropped in Fantasy value today as not one of their members joined TEAM CSR at Alpine Village for the Malta match. However, Treća Generacija president Mishko made the long journey to join the boys for a beer and a brat. Mishko bet CSR’s Ante Kvartuč $5 that Ivo Iličević would score against Malta- he did not. Thank you for the kind donation Mishko and better luck next time.

Modric for captain! If he can be a captain for Tottenham, why not here? I like Srna a lot in terms of skill, but yeah I am tired of the crap he pulls.
Here is my take on the Croatia-Malta game.
1) The over/under(total goals) on this game was 3.5. Vegas knows.
2) Most of our players could care less about this game. All that was important was to get the three points and get back on the flight to their clubs.
3) Kranjcar, the most motivated man on the pitch. Niko isnt playing at Tottenham, well rested, and trying up up his stock for a transfer this winter. Niko was born to play soccer. One of the most talented players on the team. Kranjcar might lack discipline and speed, but he makes up for this in his technical ability.
4) The pitch was embarrassing. Im sure the players were passive, hoping to avoid injury.
5) Srna disapointed me. Picking up a yellow card against Malta? Is he captain worthy?
@Mishko,
Thanks for coming out. Great to meet you. Hopefully, you will continue to join us at Alpine for A Hef-game-brat. Don't feel bad about the $5, I lost $5 after betting Ante that the rest of the England-France game would go scoreless after 74 minutes. Damn Crouch.
@Ante B,
nice 3-0 prediction. However, way off on goalscorers.
@Andrej
Georgia is no joke. 6 points are not in the bag, nor do we need 6 points. I wouldnt be too disappointed with 4 points. Qualification is a marathon not a sprint. If we lose in Greece, then the six points against Georgia wont matter.
"Please dont question Kranjcar effort or passion because he does have it. Some of you have unrealistic expectations from the guy to start."
I agree. You cant have a kranjcar with olic speed. Unless you have a mad scientist on the bench.
@Fisto
1) Malta is not a team full of fishermen. 2) winning 3-0 or 8-0, same shit. Qualification will be decided in Athens. 3) I agree with you on Srna 4) Kranjcar deserves more credit. Kranjcar is not an olic that needs 100% effort to make it. Kranjcar has the work rate of Petric… both can score given just one opportunity at goal. Kranjcar is an intelligent player that conserves his energy and strikes at the right time.
I'm really getting sick of all this talk about Bale, he's a one trick pony. Once defenses learn to actually play him, he'll be useless. Bale does not have the skill and imagination as Niko, and that's a fact.
@ the Anonymous…….actually, please do look at the meters ran stat (which is not an accurate account of how one or one's team plays the game). His numbers are actually average with all the others in his position. He does have the work ethic, he has always had the work ethic. If he did not have the work ethic he would not have led his team to an FA Cup, he would not be at Spurs and he would not be on the repka. This talk that he has no work ethic is just false. Maybe it's his height and that makes him look slow when compared to smaller players. No one is saying he is a speedster, but his work ethic has never been questioned since he has been in England. Right now he is caught in a tough place; Bale and VDV are better.
On the other note I would have loved to see Vida play last night. 3 cards for Srna in 3 games? Please! Is that a captain mentality? I respect that he goes out and like some of you say works 30 times harder then Kranjcar but he just isnt good enough at RB! Like I said about his theatrics are starting to kill me he is just as bad as Ronaldo with everything he does. I for sure thought Vida was coming in after he was in such "agonizing pain"! or lack of it. He is still good enough to be in the team thats not my point I just dont like him at RB at all because he is just so sporadic. We should experiment come friendlies next year.
If we do a stat of most productive per distance ran then Kranjcar is the most productive player in the PL. I can agree with you there but to me he is still a starter its not like HR tactics have been something wonderful or that you can defend his recent string of results for basically the whole season. The difference is Pep from Barca would find a way to field VdV Modric Kranjcar while Harry would be clueless on what to do….I wouldnt mind if he was rotting on the bench of a better club but tottenham is a 1st year CL team with a coach who has never had such a good squad in his hands…Last season it was all 442 now its 4411. I mean go look at VdV goals this year it would be a compilation of Crouch heading it down for him to finish it…are those good tactics? Its not just Kranjcar he is going to upset but its going to be a few decent players…I can already see it now when Defoe gets back and he plays a 442…Crouch and Defoe up top and then VdV or Lennon or some other midfielder will have to hit the bench because no striker is good enough to play alone so a quality midfielder has to be sacrificed. I dont care what they do all I care about is our croatians getting games and moving forward in qualifying and there careers.
Fisto's post
No one is doubting kranjcar's technical skill and touch when he has the ball. I pose this question to you ziva and andrej, besides the israel game, what other game since leaving hajduk has kranjcar run as much?
If you meaured meters ran, like they do in the champs league, I bet you kranjcar's avg would be one of the worst in the PL when he plays. That's what bothers me the most, no one is questioning his technical skill. If he had the work ethic, he would be playing reguarly for Spurs.
To me players like Lennon, Bale, and even our own Olic are a injury or two away from not being as effective as they once were. Those players have hard work and pace but lack in to many things outside of there game. Olics injury will probably spill the last days to his career at his age but Lennon seems like he will always be one dimensional typical winger. Bale does have hope but i rarely see him beat opponents with anything but speed. If he picks up a hamstring, groin, or any muscle injury he will eventually lose pace and therefore be far less effective player. England screams and hails every player as the next best thing this guy has had 3 or 4 good games this season while being average at best the rest of the time. The guy is being hailed as Ronaldo, Messi in england while he isn't even Robben good. We can agree to disagree here but thats just how I feel…
@anonymous, VdV has been injured/suspended in a few matches and still didn't get the nod behind the striker. Jenas engine/defense is letting Zanetti score 70 seconds into the Inter match. I know Kranjcar does not prefer those roles obviously but he has not seen any playing time even from subs. Only 2 times when Modric got injured and had to be subbed…or meaningless Cup in ET vs Arsenal down 3-1 already…with 15 minutes to go. How could you not be frustrated that the likes of Keane, Palacios, Sandro, Jenas, have all seen more sub time then you regardless if Tottenham was up or down same subs get used…Harry is not a genius tactically he is clueless and thats why Lennon is ineffective nowadays and Bale will become the same way if he does not learn how to change things up. I watch Tottenham and its boring football since Bale has been at LM with Lennon or right. All they do is run down the wing and cross cross cross cross!! Looks like a typical england team and they never score because as usual they just serve cross to nobody. How many times I have just wondered why would you cross that when you have VdV modric in the middle to pass through them. But i guess i am just spoiled watching Kranjcar, Modric and Rakitic pass the ball in our midfield and enjoy that far more then tottenham. I dont know I am just very bored of how tottenham play i rather watch bayern, arsebal, and barca thats how you play imo not so much of his 1 on 1 nonsense and wasteful crosses in to nobody(crouch for the most part) 1 goal in 13 PL matches.
@ Andrej
If you understand that Niko can't play CM and he doesn't usually prefer to play on the right, then how in the hell will he play over VDV which plays behind a striker. Again,It doesn't mean he has no talent, it doesn't mean he has no passion, it just means he may not be suited for the tactics of Redknapp which likes the ball sent out wide to a fast winger in which Niko is not. He is a great player in the right circumstance, just like many other players are.
If Kranjcar has the speed of ronaldo or messi he would be one of the best in the world!
To me honestly Kranjcar has the touch and skill on the ball that all the best players in the world possess outside maybe Ronaldinho(who nowadays has no pace at all either). People fall in love with how fast someone can run and thats all great but those players usually dont possess the technical abilities(not always of course there is Ronaldo…ect there are a few there) I love Olic the man is an engine gives it a 100% but our passing game is much better without him. We have just CDM last night and I know its a game just against Malta but our passing is fluent spaces are opening up for eduardo and petric…nice 1,2 passing…I dont think that theres been a guy since Suker or Dudu to score 5 goals in 3 games let alone one of our midfielders…We looked great last night and now to slag of on Kranjcar is wrong.
On the side note Maksimir needs to burn to the ground already. I am more embarrassed each game they show there. I dont give 2 shits for that place any longer. New stadium should be at top of the list that field was elementary looking and 5,000 fans to show up to a free match…is embarrassing i am just in shock i dont care what team nor do i care what the weather is like…any place in croatia that is a sell out but zagreb regardless of friendly or competition or malta or brazil…
fisto…….sorry, bro, but have to call you out for writing nonsense….your words, "he possesses no effort and passion whatsoever." …..where do you come up with this garbage. I think we can all agree Kranjcar is not a fast player, it does not take a smart person to see that. But, to say he has no passion and effort is just stupid. You might not like the guy, and that is one thing, but the kid loves the game and has made great strides from his days at dinamo and hajduk. Maybe its something to do with his body language, but the kid is probably our most gifted technical player. He is up there.
It disturbs me when people throw around these type of generalizations and offer no supporting proof, evidence, examples, etc…
to Fisto: I know it doesn't mean much, but all of Malta's players are professional players. Sure, they don't play in the greatest leagues (some do play abroad), but they aren't an Andorra or San Marino. Look at their results in recent years. Remember they even took points off us 4 years ago
Andrej, I didn't say Kranjcar had to be an idiot to play with passion. I've only seen him play his ass of one game, where he was constantly running back n forth the entire game. That game was against Israel. If he had that kind of ATTITUDE all the time, especially for Tottenham, then maybe Redknapp would play him more. Talent only takes you so far my friend. If he ran his ass of like he did against Israel every game, or for starters SOME games, then I would have a little bit more respect for that guy. You heard it yourself, the guy plays for himeself and doesn't give a shit about anything else.
Please dont question Kranjcar effort or passion because he does have it. Some of you have unrealistic expectations from the guy to start. He will never be consistent over the course of the season he isnt that kind of player but to slag him of because you think he is not passionate is ridiculous. The guy is a class act he is a pure attacking player alright that is fine with me he possess no defensive ability but now you are throwing in Jenas and Huddlestone ect comparisons. Those two are probably the least talented players I have seen in a midfield and are the primary reason Tottenham will not compete with the best sides. I watch them but personally dont give a #$#$ about them. I understand the whole Kranjcar is not a CM thats fine but he is capable of slotting in behind a striker and has not been given a chance over Jenas. 180 minutes this season for Kranjcar ya that is a joke even if he was on Barcelona let alone Tottenham.
I am just saying he needs to do what is best for himself he is capable of playing at a bigger club then Tottenham and riding that bench but not riding the bench of Tottenham…the real problem is he has not been given a shot when he was damn well deserving of one. Tottenham has played some boring long ball soccer this year and Kranjcar could fix that. His matches are so easy to point out when he is not there but Bale has had 3 good matches this season and been at best average in most and he is being crowned as the next best thing. I am not blind its true we all have our own opinions but Kranjcar is huge for Croatia now and down the road. I dont see where you can say he is not passionate…what does the guy have to do to show more…he is just a laid back guy he doesn't go over the top and do idiotic things he doesnt make an idiot out of every celebration like ronaldo…he is plain yes but that does not make him less passionate.
With a team like Malta, a team full of fishermen and pastry chefs, the result like should have been far greater. However, given the conditions on the field, 3-0 is suitable.
Regards the Kranjcar slurping, get off the guy's sack. He scored a goal and a half today against ordinary people. For those hating on his place at Spurs, if Kranjcar had the workrate of a Jenas or those other guys, maybe he would be a part of the Starting XI. Unfortuantely for him, it's not part of his DNA. After all, the guy plays for "himself."
@Andrej, It's not the fact he's slow, he possesses no effort and passion whatsoever and that is leading to his downfall in the BPL.
Regarding the Srna haters, I am one of them. It seems like for the past few years, his habitual unneccesary fouling and faking injuries is increasing at a faster rate and is a real turn off. Is this a real captain? Is this the example you want to set for the rest of the players? He spends more time on the ground rolling around then he does anything else.
Glad to see Kalinic got a goal. When they panned over to the bench, Asanovic had a huge smile on his face. Even though against Malta, it must feel good to notch won while wearing the Šahovnica.

@ Mishko,
Missing $5? HAHAHA….
And the only reason I posted it is because you were wearing a Dinamo jacket today…not fan, 🙂
Ante I can't believe you posted a picture of my missing $5 dollars. Anyway, it nice meeting you guys and see next year.
I know it doesn't really matter, but Croatia was unbeaten in 2010. I know because of the World Cup they weren't, but that is still impressive. They are probably the only team not to qualify for the WC but stay unbeaten in 2010. A huge applause for the guys, now it will mean more if they do that in 2011. I am really excited for Jelavic, hopefully he comes up and proves he can play because I am kind of sick of Petric.
@Ante B
Moj naklon vase velicanstvo.
Sta je reci da nisi spomenio Kranjcara?
Odajmo mladicu priznanje: bez obzira na brzinu, njegov talent, taktika i nacin s balunon je unikat.
Pozdrav iz Splita
BTW, Georgia beat Slovenia today 2-1 in Slovenia…They are not going to be a roll over team for us by any means. They are now playing with confidence and heart….We must get all 6 points from them but now its not looking as easy at it originally seemed it would be on paper…
3:0, who called it?
I didn't see the game but the result and the performance seems about right, and the dreadful looking field/Zagreb weather probably didnt help.
Nice to see Niko keep it going, that pass to Kalinic was a real beauty!
Lots of work left to do before we qualify though, I hope the boys don't think its over yet.
We all know Kranjcar will never be the most consistent player in the world but when he as at the top of his game he is up with some of the best. That also goes for when he is on the bottom he is like having player less but I will take my chances with him every time. The PL isn't suited for him he does not have the pace but for the most part the players around him rarely possess half the technical abilities he does. He is so slow but so smart and its scary what he would be like if he had some pace on him. He should go to Germany or Italy or even Spain somewhere where he can start and show his talent of. Nobody here is saying Kranjcar is the next best thing because we know he wont do it every match but when he is inform he is up with the best.
People in England will always choose pace and getting from one end of the pitch to the next as the greatest thing to happen while others rather see nice passing football. Lennon is not off form he is just one dimensional and teams have found him out and learned to mark him…Bale will have the same problem in the near future believe me I think he could be great but he has to add far more then that one move he always uses before he can move into the next level. The other players playing over Kranjcar are Jenas, Hudd, and Palacios…sometimes Sandro…I guess its all tactical but its not tactical when you are down 1-0 to Man U and you put on Palacios instead of Kranjcar.
It does not matter its easier for Kranjcar to play for the national team because he is surrounded by better technical players then he is at tottenham and we are much better passing team then them….
As for Srna today he was nothing short of an idiot. I wanted to see Vida play. I really am ticked of about Srna more and more he is such a flopper and its embarrassing….cry scream yell…shut up and play!
Without Kranjcar, they barely squeek by with a 1-0 win.
Having said that, this is not the kind of match Harry Rednapp is going be saying "damn, that boy is good!" because of his performance against lowly Malta.
I bet $5 bucks that Ivo was going to score to a CSR guy, so I obviously lost that, but I think in general Croatia look pretty good concidering the condition of the pitch.
another top notch performance for niko. sure, it's malta, but it shows that he takes all his matches seriously. the assist to kalinic on the the third goal was a great display of his vision and touch. i only caught the second half, so i'm anxious to see the highlights of the first two goals as soon as it's posted on CSR.
i agree with the guys that say that redknapp knows what he's doing for the most part. but i disagree with those that say niko can only play on the wing. regardless if a midfielder plays in the middle or on the wing, his job is the same…to connect possession from defense to offense, and to create opportunities to score. a true midfielder, like niko, can play anywhere in the midfield effectively. sure some guys specialize on the wing, but that doesn't mean they can't play in the middle. now, if you were to say lennon shouldn't play in the middle, or even bale, then i'd agree because they lack the ball skill and vision. but niko excels in those areas. it's not like basketball where you can;t have a 1 play the 4 or the 5 (unless your magic johnson).
Post Game Report
Well Niko Kranjcar is the star again. A great ball to Kalinic who's header wasn't even that great, but Kalinic can't find the net lately so maybe it's a start. After this game, the mindset should be Play him Harry or f*** off. Niko deserves to be a first team player on most teams, so if Harry doesn't want to play him too bad his loss.
Luka had a quiet 2nd half and really blew a pass to Rakitic. You can't do that in the big games, but with these conditions and the way Modric has been playing give him a pass. Rakitic really didn't get into the game which isn't pretty.
The defense is still a bit shaky, as Srna was annoying through out the game. He fouls still too much and they aren't good fouls ( Dujmovic seems to foul a lot, but I didn't have a problem with most of them). Three games three yellow cards for Srna, that is some bad discipline.
The subs were good decisions, although I would have liked to see Vida in for Srna after he got hurt. Ivo didn't do a lot, then got one chance but couldn't put a foot on the ball. Manzo never fails to amaze me in how bad he is. He really struggles to do much and the foul he drew didn't impress me. Your one on one with a Malta defender.. break him!!! Then Manzo somehow missed a header in point blank range, once again I don't know how he misses. Kalinic has a really nice touch, but his shooting is pretty bad. That one on one was really poor.
Overall fun game to watch, put me in a good mood with a 3-0 win. It could have been 6 or 7 but I won't dwell on it. This is a game where Jelavic can really put three in the net and dominate. I can't wait to see him in March. I hope Croatia books a friendly in Feburary. It's going to suck not watching them for a while. Anyway fun game, back in first place!!
If this the effect that sitting on the Tottenham bench is having on Kranjcar then I don't think it's too bad a thing that he's not getting any playing time.
Kalinic atones for earlier with a nice header.
why not take Srna off! I cannot stand to watch him play. I honestly have started to not like him more and more every time i watch him play!
Not surprised about Petric coming out, but a little surprised about Kalinic coming in.
Srna is picketina…..i doubt there is injury.
yo, allen….take a look at niko's 2nd goal…it was a deflection.
for all you guys complainig about Niko's lack of PT at Spurs. Remember, he is playing for a coach that likes him and for a coach that won a FA Cup with Niko playing a leading role. This guy knows Niko better than most coaches, so I trust Harry in his thinking. Maybe it changes, we shall see.
I think we are playing well. The field is awful and is probably the only thing holding us back from the score being even higher. Can't say anyone really has been awful…Petric has been weaker but with the field the way it is its understandable as those were the moments he has lost possession.
I dont care for the Kranjcar argument for Spurs anymore he is good enough to play the end. Jenas and Bentley are not better then him and he has not been played in his favored position. I love Bale and think he is better then Kranjcar but I dont think he is as big of a rave as the English do. He is like Lennon when hot and when not he has been shut down by smart coaches. Put in mind Inter is not coached by a great coach. He needs to leave Tottenham to move on with his career and start playing regularly somewhere anywhere.
Uefa.com confirms that Lakic is not available for the match.
If espn is correct, Lakic did not dress for the match. I'd like to see Ilicevic though.
First half thoughts
Mladen Petric is the only Croatian playing pretty bad. Petric has lost possession a lot and his shots have been poor. I wouldn't mind taking Petric off and put on either Manzo or Lakic.
Modric has been unlucky this month. He has taken a long shot at least once or twice a game, yet the goalie has made a play on it. This team he was denied on the post. Modric has been doing his thing.
Niko Kranjcar has easily been man of the match. That set up to Pranjic early on was beautiful. Kranjcar's first goal was top notch bottom left corner, not going to stop those. Then his second shot was in a great area. I expected a goal but not upper 90. I still don't see why Niko doesn't start, because first off David Bentley is awful. Bentley had a few nice shots against Sunderland, but he can't run at all ( he is even slower than Niko) and Bentley has no dribbling skills like Niko. Bentley is garbage, so compare Niko with him not with Jenas. As for Niko defensively, well he has gotten beaten pretty easily twice and misjudged a ball with Pranjic in the box. So yeah it wasn't pretty.
Other than that, it's been fun but as usual Croatia missing some good chances. Petric miss wasn't pretty and Eduardo can't catch a break. Srna could be done for a while with that injury, let's hope he is alright because he is essential for Croatia and Shathkar in Champions League. From that injury, I am expecting some bad news. Modric was unlucky and Rakitic hasn't gotten involved. I really like Dujmovic, he made a great tackle inside the box. I will keep an eye on him. If Srna can't play, I say bring on Vida!!
they look a lot better when deflected in, but he is playing well.
dream start, 2-0 before the half. This is over. First place in the group as we finish up the year.
Even if it is against Malta, Kranjcar's shots are looking pretty good.
thanks ivo i got a feed.. appreciate the effort
You are kind of right. My point had to do more with the quality of the players. Ergo, if Jenas can have some minutes, Niko should. Anyway, I get your point. I guess the comparison should have been with Bentley then.
Dave, I just checked and Gingerbloke (the justintv site) is offline. Try this link http://myp2p.eu/
you cant compare niko and jenas… niko can't play in the middle his to slow and a defensive liability in the current midfield set up if he plays a central role which is where jenas plays… thats why jenas play more minutes… niko can only play on the wing
ivo thanks but i live in toronto, canada , espn3 only wors for the USA… anyone know the justin tv site or any other site.. i would like to watch the game since my boss is not here
I don't think he should be a starter either, but guys like Jenas and Bentley having more minutes than Niko….mmmmmm.
I don't think scoring goals against Malta will get him in the starting line up. And quite honestly, he should not be starting at Spurs unless there are injuries.
Hope Harry's watching…Kranjcar still wants his spot back.
Dave, what about going to espn3.com?
Totally agreed. Besides, what kind of terrible drainage that field has. Whenever you see games in the Bundesliga, for example, and is pouring raining, the pitch looks in perfect conditions. Anyway, let´s see what happens with this game.
can someone tell me the justintv address that is showing the game i can't remember is since i'm at work…i can't use ATDHE at work since i can't download sharTV please let me know as soon as possible
Pranjic will play more at left midfield since we will have all possession today. It will be a 3-man backline.
This match should not be taking place today. Look at the pitch. The ball is at times stoppingin the various puddles on the field. But, hey the savez keeps insisting that maksimir is the only place to play national team games.
The pitch is crap.
I'm predicting 3-0 for Croatia (2 from Petric, 1 from Eduardo).
Just checked the players available tonight…scratch Lakic from the show tonight.
Pranjic as a left back again.
Well I am off from school, sadly I am legit sick so no Scorpicos. I will watch it from ESPN 3 with my Boban jersey on!! I got a 6-0 Croatia win with Petric getting a hat trick, Eduardo, Kranjcar, and my new favorite young rising star on Croatia Ivo Ilcevic. I want to see this guy in Premier next year so badly.
agreed on petric. He shows up against these crap opponents.
5-0, Ilicevic and Lakic for everyone
Croatia 4-0. Petric x2, Kranjcar and Rakitic. Petric usually plays well against these teams and Kranjcar still has lots to prove, even if his opposition is Malta.
Croatia 4 Malta 0 (Rakitic, Kranjcar, Eduardo, Ilicevic)
@Mishko,
Hopefully, you come through tomorrow. Looking forward to meeting you.
Predictions gentlemen?
Croatia 3
Malta 0
Dudustaša (2)
Modrić (1)
I like that Vujicevic played. I don't know much about him other than he gets decent amount of playing time for a Champions League team. Maybe useful later on.
Does anyone know what the odds are of Vukcevic from Hoffenhiem playing for our youth teams? I see he has played for the German youth teams already.
U21s beat Slovenia 2:1. Lendric (Hajduk player on loan at Zrinjski Mostar) and Sacer (Varazdin) scored.
Two diaspora players played: Vujicevic (FC Twente, born in Sarajevo) and Petar Sliskovic (Mainz, also born in Sarajevo)
If play my cards right, I'll be able to meet you guys and gals at Alpine village.
game will also be played on ESPN3 with you folks that have access to it
