Croatian superstar, Luka Modrić, has been voted La Liga’s biggest bust of the season thus far, alongside Barcelona’s Alex Song, in a recent poll conducted by Spanish newspaper Marca. Modrić was a late transfer to Real Madrid in the summer of 2012, coming over from Tottenham for a staggering £33 million. However, he hasn’t lived up to all the hype.
“This is Real Madrid. I know the huge media pressure on transfers. I’m not looking for an alibi, I’m not that guy, but it’s very demanding to adjust to a huge club like Real Madrid. I have had a number of solid performances, I failed in some but overall I proved I can offer something.”
Although Modrić has set up some spectacular goals this season, he has only scored one himself in La Liga. But let’s take a closer look at the numbers.
Modrić has only played in 14 La Liga games for Real Madrid this season, starting eight times and coming off the bench the other six. But the more interesting number to look at is how many minutes he has actually played: 722.
722 minutes on the pitch translates into just over eight full matches played. Is that enough time for anyone to impress? Yes, we’re talking about one of the most storied clubs in world football history, but Modrić came to Real Madrid late in the summer in a season where nothing has gone right for Los Blancos. Manager Jose Mourinho already has one foot out the door, their world-class goalie and captain Iker Casillas is being benched and Real Madrid trail leaders Barcelona by an astounding 16 points.
Sure, you can say Luka Modrić hasn’t lived up to all the hype at Real Madrid, but then again, no one has this season.
