In one of the most anticipated Champions League Round of 16 draws in recent years, Luka Modrić and Real Madrid will take on Wayne Rooney and Manchester United Wednesday (2:45 PM ET) from Estadio Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid. It is almost certain that manager Jose Mourinho will start German midfielder Mesut Ozil for the big game since he was rested Saturday versus Sevilla.
But that leaves either Kaka or Modrić to start on the bench.
In a season where neither Real Madrid nor Luka Modrić have shined, a new test will be written for both over the next two Champions League matches. Real Madrid are dead in the water in La Liga, sitting 16 points behind leaders Barcelona while Modrić has already been labeled ‘Bust of the Year’ in Spain. However, both parties can turn it around with solid performances against Manchester United as the world watches.
With rumblings out of Madrid that Modrić’s status is anything but safe with the club going into the summer break, the Croatian maestro will find no better situation than to showcase his skills to the world versus mighty Manchester United.
